Importance of Genre and What it Means for my Opening

Genre is very important to both the producers and the consumers in terms of how a film or movie is received. To consumers, genre is important in terms of allowing them to understand what movies they will enjoy and what movies they will not enjoy. There are conventions of certain genres that appear in every film of that genre, but with different overall ideas. For example, tense music is common in horror movies, as well as dark environments, blood, and props that suggest danger (e.g, knives, guns, chainsaws). It is important to establish genre within the first few minutes of a film so that the audience know what type of film the film they are about to view is going to be.

The producers also view genre as very important, especially in their respective companies. There may be, for example, a production company that specialises in making horror-based films, so they have all the props, costume designers, and actors suited for the part with easy access. It is also important for production companies to have a genre due to the fact that they can see what it is about a particular type of story that makes it so popular, and thus successful, and therefore money-making. Producers need to earn money back from their investment into their film, so if they choose a popular genre, it is possible to become successful off of it.

My opening will be sure to feature many conventions of horror in order for it to be well-recieved. This will include tense music, dark environments, and opening titles that suggest that it is a dark film, unlike a romance or a family film. Also, I will ensure the audience know it is a 15 rated movie due to the certificate that will be shown at the beginning of the film. The name 'Full Moon' along with it's synopsis also allows the audience to understand what type of film it is.
